Squash: Nunholm Squash Club to Affiliate to National Body Again

16 06 2009

Scottish SquashAt the recent club EGM it was decided to reaffiliate to Scottish Squash, our national body.

We have sought guarantees from them that they will deliver some value for our money too though! We have been assured that we will be visited 3 times through the year by a coach from Scottish Squash to work on our junior development.

We will be able to hold the South of Scotland Masters Tournament in early 2010. This will hopefully be a festival of masters squash.

There will be ranking points available to guarantee a good entry. We will hopefully have some from south of the border coming up to compete and the standard should be excellent -watch this space for news.

If there is anyone out there who would like to provide some sponsorship for this inaugural event please let the committee know.

We also plan to get some people through the UKCC level 1 coaching course later in the year. This may require some fundraising even at the greatly reduced rates for affiliated clubs so we’ll let you know what is planned.

19 05 2009

Davy Rogan

Davy Rogan

The club’s Davy Rogan was last week honoured at the 2009 Nithsdale Sports Council awards where, for squash, he won the McMurdo Award for service to local sport.

He is currently the Scottish National over 70’s and over 75’s Squash Champion for 2009 and puts everyone’s dates for sporting retiral into stark perspective.

An extract from the nomination written by the squash section is reproduced below.

Davy’s illustrious sports career began in 1954! He was a keen and talented badminton player and success came to him in the 50’s when, as a junior, he retained the South of Scotland Senior Singles Champion title for 8 years. He then won the Scottish under 21 singles and doubles titles in 1954 and represented Scotland against Ireland and senior Scottish team vs The RAF. Read the rest of this entry »

The Olympic initiative is backed by Scot Peter Nicol, former World no 1, “If I’d been given the opportunity, I would have been there. My four Commonwealth Games gold medals were my best achievements as a squash player. Squash: Nunholm boys take their turn for Scotland

Taking their turn for Scotland: Robin Ridley, Davy Rogan, Sue Strachm, Jimmy Wells, Ronnie Carter

Taking their turn for Scotland: Robin Ridley, Davy Rogan, Sue Strachan, Jimmy Wells, Ronnie Carter

After Nunholm’s Sue Strachan and Davy Rogan took part in the Masters Squash Home Internationals last weekend it is now the turn of the reigning Scottish champions, Jimmy Wells and Robin Ridley and Lockerbie number 1, Ronnie Carter. They play on Friday night and Saturday at the Edinburgh Sports Club where they take on Ireland, Wales and the auld enemy, England.

In Dublin, Sue Strachan’s over 35’s team managed to come runners up to England in a very hard fought competition with 3-2 and 4-1 wins over Ireland and Wales respectively. England, however, just proved too strong and finished easy winners with Scotland coming out top in the “Celtic Nations Cup”.

Sue was delighted with the performance of her team and her individual performance. “I played the best tournament squash I have ever played particularly against Ireland’s Jenny Dillon in the deciding match of the tie with the score at 2-2.” Jenny had beaten Sue easily in their one previous encounter and so the form card suggested she would be victorious again. “The spirit in the Scottish team was great though and the others had battled too hard to get us into that position for me to fail them. I had a job to do for my team so I just went out and did it.”

The following week Scottish Champion Jimmy Wells plays for the Scotland Over-45s in Edinburgh. Joining him in that team is Ronnie Carter from the Lockerbie Squash Club.

After the dust had settled it was the teams of Finite and Bard Vet who were to contest the final.

The format in the cup is of three games American scoring to 15 with a two-point float after every game which has proved to produce some very close matches in the past, none more so than in the final. Read the rest of this entry »
