Despite losing the final match to Clarkston, Dumfries had done enough by winning their previous three matches to secure the title.
In the previous match Dumfries faced a tricky tie as they travelled to Queens Park (Glasgow) who still had an outside chance of winning the league.
After winning the first match 6-2, 6-0 Dumfries lost their second match 4-6, 6-1, and 10-8 which was their first loss in the league. However this proved to be a small blip as Dumfries powered home with two more wins in the singles 7-6, 6-4 and 6-3, 6-4 which was then followed by two victories in the doubles 7-5, 6-0 and 6-4, 5-7 & 10-5.
With the league title almost secured, Sunday’s trip to Clarkston proved to be an anti-climax as an under strength Dumfries team suffered it’s only defeat of the league campaign. However with convincing wins in their previous three matches it would have taken a whitewash from Clarkston to overturn the Dumfries team’s advantage.
The match itself was evenly contested as both teams recorded two singles victories each and one doubles win each. This had the match tied at 6 points each and therefore a tiebreak shoot-out had to be completed to determine the match winner. Dumfries started the stronger winning the first shoot-out and with a match point in the second game could have sealed the victory but unfortunately they couldn’t convert the opportunity and eventually lost the shoot-out 2-1 which handed the match to Clarkston.
Dumfries can now look forward to next years challenge in Division 3.

Despite the damp conditions, the second and final home match of the Aegon Team Tennis League went ahead on Sunday. A big thank you to the cricket section for allowing us to borrow some of their kit which allowed us to make the courts playable.
Dumfries fresh from their previous victory entertained Livilands 2 who are from Stirling. With a near faultless performance from Dumfries No1 Colin Dunbar (6-1, 6-0), the match couldn’t have started any better for Dumfries and despite the heavy damp tennis balls the Stirling team never really troubled the home team.
Chris Topping (6-3, 6-3), Lister McKiddie (6-3, 6-2) and Dan McKiddie (6-4, 6-3) also had straight set wins and with Colin & Lister (6-1, 6-2) and Chris and Dan (6-2, 6-3) completing the victory, Dumfries sit top of the league after their two games. They now have two tricky away fixtures to complete the league, the first is away to Queens Park on the 10th with the Clarkston game still to be arranged.
