Uh-oh, those Poker Nights

17 02 2008

Tell me more, tell me more, did you get very far?
Tell me more, tell me more, like, does he reach the bar?

As the Grease soundtrack merged into the subconscious, while it played on Dakota Dave’s Sky music channel, an excellent turn-out of thirty three players started out on the odyssey that is the cricket club Poker Challenge.

A metaphorical hush descended on the bar as Caroline’s glamorous replacement croupier, namely Dakota Dave himself, stipulated the radical new set of rules to be followed and chips to be staked.

Tell me more, tell me more, was it Flush at first sight?
Tell me more, tell me more, did Bevo put up a fight?

The players, amidst a flurry of ‘more beers’ from the bar, coped well in adversity and were not put off by the sight of Dakota Dave’s Las Vegas shirt which would have fluoresced nicely in the neon lights of the Vegas Strip itself.

As retirees began to prop up the bar, and bemoan the cards life had dealt them and dream of idyllic cricket grounds with picket fences, those with stamina and concentration (and luck) began to come to the fore.

Tell me more, tell me more, how much dough did he spend?
Tell me more, tell me more, could he get to the end?

After over three hours of gruelling match-play the winners of the latest Poker Challenge began to emerge. B.C Lara put in a cameo innings and finished a creditable fourth for someone returning to the International limelight. Kyle, friend of the rich and famous, i.e. the fourth place player, came third. Kevin played the youth card well and came in second (what are they teaching in schools these days). But Guy, that arch poker player, came through to claim the title of Nunholm Card Shark for February 2008.

Until the next poker night, that is!
