Dumfries climb the league ladder

Giffnock III’s 0 – 2 Dumfries Men HC (Iain Callander, Ben Chambers)

After a good result last weekend Dumfries were determined to carry their form into Saturday’s game against Giffnock in Glasgow.

Dumfries travelled with a very young and inexperienced team with an average age of less than 23 per player.

The game started well as both teams played some nice hockey but the visitors seemed to be playing the better game, as they continued to move the ball around the Giffnock mid-field and create some early chances.

The first chance fell to striker Jimmy Clark as a corner, taken by Iain Callander, was deflected by Clark towards goal but went narrowly wide.

Callander also had a good opportunity but his goal-bound shot was blocked by the backside of teammate Clark.

He went down in obvious pain but battled on and played for the remaining 50 minutes.

Dumfries opened the scoring late in the first half when mid-fielder Jamie Campbell played a pass to the top of the Giffnock D to forward Jimmy Clark.

His shot on goal was blocked, but Dumfries captain Iain Callander reacted quickly and swept the ball into the goal and past the keeper.

The second half began with Giffnock attacking the Dumfries back line of McCoskry, Shearer and Hopkin but the three youngsters did well against very skilful and experienced opponents.

The onslaught continued but Dumfries’ best chances came as they broke forward and caught the Giffnock players out of position.

Striker Ben Chambers picked up the ball on the penalty spot, turned his marker and fired a low drive into the bottom corner of the goal doubled the lead.

However, Giffnock continued to press and won a couple of penalty corners but failed to make their opponents pay as they couldn’t convert either.

Chambers could have scored another two in the second half but lacked composure in the opponent’s D, and tried to smash the ball past the keeper when he could have controlled and picked his spot.

Dumfries held on in the closing stages of the game for only their second clean sheet of the season.

After conceding another penalty corner, keeper Stuart Moscrop made a superb save low to his right after the striker got the shot away before the Dumfries defenders could get out to tackle.

Another good three points for Dumfries sees them climb eight points from the relegation battle and towards mid-table.

Captains man of the match award goes to Fraser Shearer, who put in a good performance at left back. He coped well against his opposite number and put in some super tackles at important stages of the game.

This Saturday sees Dumfries play at home to struggling Motherwell at, 10:45 at, the King George V Park, Dumfries.

Dumfries team: Stuart Moscrop, John McCoskry, Fraser Shearer, Richard Hopkin, Iain Callander (c), Jamie Campbell, Eliot Waterhouse, Scott Robertson, Jim Clark, Ben Chambers, Iain Rowan. Subs: Matthew Anderson

Men and women of any age are invited to go along and join the team’s training sessions on Tuesday evenings from 6-8pm at the KGV Park, Glasgow Road, Dumfries.
