Old Crocks give young guns a good running

21 05 2008

The annual game between the past and present members of Dumfries Men’s Hockey Club was played last week at the town’s KGV Park.

The present team had a real age advantage with an average of only 25 while the Old Crocks averaged 41.

The game started with both teams having chances but the first fell to Jimmy Clark of the Old Crocks. He found himself clear in the area but saw his shot cannon off the post and away to safety.

Both sides tired quickly in the extreme heat.

Scott Robertson saw his super effort saved by Moscrop at his near post and go behind for a corner to Dumfries.

The Old Crocks did win a couple of penalty corner’s but Callander and Wilson were out quickly to challenge before the attackers could get a shot on goal.

The goal came from a penalty corner when Hopkin dragged the ball out to Callander who beat both of the on-rushing players, rounded the keeper and saw his mis-hit shot trickle into the goal.

The possession for the remainder of the half was for the Old Crocks but they could not find a way through.

Playing his only game of the season in goals, Campbell made some amazing saves from his opposing players to keep the score at 1-0 going into half-time.

The second half started and saw the Old Crocks use their experience and pass the ball around trying to stretch the Dumfries defence. They did create a few chances but nothing that Campbell couldn’t deal with.

The closest the Old Crocks came to scoring was when a penalty corner was struck by Clark and for the first time he had Campbell beaten but McCoskry held his position on the post well and stopped the ball just before it crossed the line.

The best chances of the second half fell to the Dumfries team when a crossed ball from the right wing saw Toby Austin putting the ball into the goal, however it was disallowed for striking his foot.

Austin then had another chance after a superb run by Hopkin saw him cut the ball back to Austin who controlled well and had to stroke the ball into the open goal but somehow the ball squirmed past the post.

In a nervy end to the game Jimmy Clark did have a couple of efforts cleared by Campbell while an effort by John Bennett went wide of the left hand post.

The game ended in victory for Dumfries, who were happy to close their season with a win against their more senior opponents.

Man of the match was awarded to Jamie Campbell in the Dumfries goal, he pulled off some amazing saves at crucial times in the game.
