Court side account of the final home internationals

20 05 2008

Friday saw a sunny Edinburgh welcome the Men’s and womens over 35’s and the mens over 40’s squash teams from all the home nations. With me at number 5 I had to begin the campaign and did so with a 3-0 win over the Welsh number 5 – this extended to the team winning 5-0 over Wales. We then took on Ireland in the morning and repeated the 5-0 result. This left us neck and neck with the strength of England.

All to play for… our number 4 went on first and was narrowly defeated 10/8 in the fifth (just 2 points in it !). I was beaten at 5 and our number 1 won easily. This left the number 3’s to battle it out. Ashley Mears took the lead 2/0 but the English girl dug in and ground out a win 9/7 in the fifth.

It was tense and exciting but it was not to be. We had been beaten by England again but this is the closest we’ve been by far…maybe next year! We collected our runners up prizes with pride and just a little frustration. It was so close. It was an honour to play for Scotland again and now just a little more training and eh… who knows what I can do?!
