Read about the plans for a summer of squash in the May Squash Newsletter below.

Dear Squash Players,

Welcome to the latest issue of the e-newsletter focussing on news and events in the squash section of Dumfries Sports Club. We have numerous new members so I hope you will make them feel welcome and assist them find playing partners.

Proposed Summer Club Night

During the summer months when the courts are not as busy due to the close-season of the D&G leagues, I’m hoping to commence a Club Night, subject to interest. In order to attract the highest attendance possible based on the most popular evening for the Club Night, please indicate your choice of evenings on the poster on the notice-board.

Subject to demand, it is proposed the Club Night will operate between 6pm-9pm on a minimum of 2 courts. All you need to do is turn up, sign in and wait your turn on court. Cost will be £1.50 per night if on a weekday night.

Squash Coaching

Coaching sessions for May (with Jimmy Wells and Jim Scriven) have been posted on the notice-board and dates for June will be being posted soon. These sessions are limited to 2 participants per session and are available on a first-come first-served basis. If you are interested please sign-up against your preferred session on the sheet on the notice-board.

If any of our other senior players would be prepared to coach a couple of sessions per month please contact me.

Junior Night

The Junior Night will be re-commencing shortly. Any feedback from juniors as to which day/time suits them would be appreciated. Contact me or any Committee member.

Membership Referral Fee

Dumfries Sports Club has just introduced a membership referral scheme which enables existing members to benefit from the introduction of new members to the Club.

Referral fees will take the form of either a voucher for use as a credit against next year’s membership fees, or as a credit to the member’s account for use towards court fees. See the Sports Club website here further details and conditions.

Summer Squash Leagues

The summer leagues commenced this month. It has been suggested that during the summer season that the scoring system is changed to American-scoring to 15 just to provide a bit of variety. Unless there are major objections, American scoring will commence in next month’s leagues.

Other News/Reminders

Active Schools programme

The Sports Club as a whole is participating in the Active Schools programme during the summer holidays. Aimed at 10-15 year-olds in D&G schools, the programme encourages them to try out sports at various outlets for free through a voucher scheme. The Squash Club will be arranging sessions to fulfil its commitment to the programme.

Dumfries Squash Club Logos

The two designs are exhibited on the notice-board. Many squash members have not indicated their preference yet and I would encourage you to take the time to do so. The Committee wishes to be sure that the final design has been selected by a good proportion of the members given that we are intending to take orders for Club polo shirts and/or T-shirts. Please put your name under your preference on the notice-board by 31st May.

100 Club

The 100 Club is still open for participation albeit behind schedule due to a need for more participants. £24 for the year. Monthly prizes. Profits to club operation and maintenance. Application forms behind the Bar.

First draw to be made next month with guaranteed 1st prize of £50.

Thanks once again to Mac Creedon for his assistance in producing the Dumfries Squash Club Roll of Honour 2010. You’ll find it on the notice-board and in the Bar.

Feedback – we would welcome your comments and suggestions for future issues of the squash newsletter.
