Cricket: Youth wins end of season encounter for Dumfries

8 09 2010

On the last home Saturday of the season Site Electrical Dumfries beat Windyedge, the visitors from Glasgow Accies, by 34 runs in a friendly match thoroughly enjoyed by both sides to round off the senior season at Nunholm.

However it was youth to the fore as the younger members of the side were set the task of winning the game. The Dumfries side were put in and eleven year old Chris McBride and Adam Elliott opened the innings.

With Elliott hitting the loose deliveries for four and McBride looking entirely comfortable the pair passed a fifty opening partnership and had reached 68 when Elliott was unlucky to be bowled for forty, in just under fifty balls, by a distinctly high full toss.

Todd Rafferty partnered McBride in a forty run partnership before falling to a close run out decision for an assured fifteen with the side just past a hundred.

Then the youngest two in the side took the score on to 140 when Dean Brotherston joined McBride. McBride reached his first fifty in senior cricket in composed fashion and with five overs left was out for exactly 50 when he was unfortunate not to clear midwicket in attempt to push on.

Those closing overs went at five an over albeit with the loss of wickets including Brotherston for 21 as the entry of Rawat into the bowling attack brought a rush of five wickets. Niall Alexander added another 15 effectively but three wickets went in the final over, to Rawat, to leave Dumfries on 167 for 8.

Despite good opening spells from Alexander and Edgar the visitors’ openers, Allen and Allen, had successfully made their way to 61 when Alexander was finally rewarded by a sharp catch at gully by Parkinson off his second last ball.

At the other end Rafferty found himself on a hat-trick with two catches, all of a sudden, making the score, 61 for 3. However his hat-trick was thwarted by having to bowl at the inconvenience of a left handed bat.

A run out delivered another wicket but with the score mounting and Rawat hitting the ball sweetly to the boundary the result was in question.

Another run-out resulted in his removal for 21 and McBride who had held his nerve in the face of those boundaries delivered a couple more wickets with his leg-breaks to alter the score to 106 for 7.

Meanwhile newly discovered off-spinner Keith Walker was applying pressure at one end with a spell of eight overs for just sixteen with several chances not taken.

Despite that Windyedge fought on with forty runs needed in five overs.

They made a valiant effort but a wicket each to McBride, Brotherston and a final yorker from Edgar ended their chase on 143 all out with ten balls left.
