Hockey: Dumfries Ladies 1sts go down two nil at Jordanhill

7 09 2010

With only ten players travelling and tropical weather conditions Dumfries were faced with a challenging opening match against a young Hillhead team.

Good linking play from midfield and attack led to some early opportunities that threatened the Hillhead keeper and gave Dumfries a strong start. For first twenty minutes they continued to test the defence and Topping won an early corner for the side, which was unlucky to not produce a goal.

Hillhead then applied pressure for the remainder of the half and used their extra player well to expose the gap in midfield and over load the defence. However, keeper McNay and her defensive line held out and cleared several penalty corners. Half time eventually arrived with a sigh of relief!

Hillhead started the second half with a slick attack which resulted in a deserved goal. This was quickly followed up by another breakaway goal and Dumfries found themselves 2-0 down early in the half.

With more clinical play returning at the back Dumfries then managed to steady the ship and for spells dominated midfield play and pressed Hillhead back into their own circle. Shots from Swanston, Miller and Topping were denied by the Hillhead goalkeeper and the match ended 2 – 0.

Despite the score line the ladies took many positives from a tough opening game and look forward to next weeks home encounter against GWC Navy Sox.

Player of the match was awarded to captain Jane Swanston for a Herculean effort in centre midfield. Thanks also to John Bennett for travelling with the team to umpire.

Team: A McNay, E Austin, N McCormick, J Young, E Miller, J Swanston (c), F Bryce, L Kennedy, R Topping A McCubbin.
