Tennis: Dumfries Tennis Club to start indoor coaching for kids

24 09 2011

Dumfries Tennis Club is set to beat the winter weather by moving indoors.

The Nunholm club have booked Max High Academy sports hall to run a pilot scheme of mini-tennis red & orange classes in the run-up to Christmas.

Starting on Saturday, October 22 and running for seven weeks, classes will take place from 9am to 10am and then from 10am to 11am.

The club is also working closely with the local Active Schools team, with a view to holding more mini tennis classes from January to March.

The new initiative comes after Dumfries Tennis Club and Tennis Coach Colin Dunbar looked at ways to try and increase tennis participation.

Sadly, Dumfries & Galloway is one of only a few areas in Scotland which doesn’t have any indoor tennis courts. This new indoor initiative being piloted by the Dumfries Club is the first step in what is hopefully the starting point to raising the games profile in the region with the ultimate desire to create an indoor facility for Dumfries & Galloway.

Having the chance to deliver coaching sessions indoors during the winter months, allows the children to continue developing their tennis and helps them to participate in our sport all year round.

Cricket: Dumfries lose out in 20/20 semi

Scotland skipper Drummond stumped off Beveridge © Stuart Rousen

APD Dumfries were unable to add a third trophy to this season’s collection in their last match at the Scottish Murgitroyd Twenty20 finals day last Sunday at Poloc. They lost their semi-final match against Premiership winners Carlton after losing their way batting second.

Dumfries bowled first and as the opposition skipper Gilmour said “Carlton struggled with the bat at the start”. The bowlers put the Edinburgh side under pressure by getting their top batsmen early when Chad Breetzke had both Mommsen and English, current and past Scotland players, caught in his first over to put Dumfries on the front foot at six for two wickets.

Carlton had to consolidate in the middle overs with Drummond and Gilmour working the singles. Scott Beveridge claimed Gilmour with a caught and bowled and then went on to have Scotland skipper Drummond well stumped by stand-in keeper Davie Davidson for 27 to make it 64 for 4. Then over the final overs Burns was able to dispatch a couple of sixes for the top score of 30 and for Carlton to reach a total of 113 for 9 with the wickets shared around the bowlers. Chris McCutcheon took two in the last four overs and was backed up with two run outs.

It was a good effort in the field by Dumfries but on a slow wicket, with a change of personnel in the batting line-up, and Saltires’ bowlers Drummond and Mommsen to overcome it was still a difficult target. So it proved as the innings never really gained the necessary momentum against some good bowling and fielding with the top three out for 21 and in the seventh over. Alan Davidson was the top scorer but the required substantial innings never appeared as wickets fell regularly. Mommsen took 2 for 6 in his four overs and as in the first innings there were two run outs.

Dumfries finished on just 65 at the close for the loss of seven wickets for what was a comfortable win by the Edinburgh side. Carlton then went on to triumph in the final restricting Clydesdale to a similar low score of 67 which they chased easily.

Dumfries Captain Beveridge said afterwards “we bowled and fielded really well but lacked depth in the batting on the day” and, for leading from the front, he earned the Dumfries Annandale Insurance Man of the Match award.

Hockey: Dumfries Ladies beat Clydesdale

6 09 2011

Dumfries Ladies 1st XI 4 – 2 GCW V. Sunday 4th September, KGV

Dumfries Ladies started the season well, fielding a strong side against tough opposition. This encounter was vital to Dumfries who are looking to build on their cup success last year by winning West District Division 1. The first half saw fast ball pace and some great attacking play from both sides. GCW won several penalty corners which they failed to convert and it was Dumfries who took the lead after 20 minutes. From a free hit Gill Green found Emma Miller who drove the ball into the D.From there Rebecca Topping set up Elen Austin who swept the ball into the goal from the back post to convert a well worked goal for the home side. Dumfries played safe for 10 minutes until half time and the score remained 1-0 at the change. Read the rest of this entry »

Tennis: Champions Hold On

4 09 2011

Dumfries Tennis Club Mens and Ladies Champions

Dumfries Tennis Club recently held their Club Championship Finals. With 10 Senior Titles and 7 Junior Titles up for grabs it promised to be an exciting day and it didn’t disappoint.

Play started at 10am with the first junior title at stake, with play commencing on the other 3 courts at 10.30am.

The men’s singles final was viewed as “the big one” with Colin Dunbar defending the title that he has won for the last 3 years against the previous winner and club stalwart Lister McKiddie.

With Colin starting as favourite he quickly got into his stride and took the first set but Lister upset the form book and comfortably took the second, to take the match to a deciding 3rd set. Lister continued on fine form into the third set with an early break of serve and the large crowd watching thought an upset was on the cards. However, Colin regained his composure to just edge the match 2-1 in sets to make it 4 singles titles in a row.

In the Ladies final, defending champion 15yrs old Sophie Robinson regained her title beating Rebecca Topping 2 sets to nil.
