Squash: Inaugural SoS Masters this weekend

17 11 2009

An opportunity this weekend for Sports Club members to come along and support their local squash player!

This Saturday and Sunday provides the opportunity to watch some top quality competitive squash in Dumfries. Nunholm Squash Club is hosting the inaugural South of Scotland Masters Open Squash Championships. This is the first such squash event to be held in the South West or the Borders.

As a Scottish Squash Masters circuit ranking tournament it provides age-group competitions from the Over 35s right up to the Over 75s for men and Over 35s and Over-50s for ladies.

The Nunholm club currently has four Scottish Masters champions (out of nine) with Jimmy Wells in the U45s, Robin Ridley in the O50s and David Rogan in both the O70s and O75s

The tournament draw took place over the weekend with 85 competitors signed up.

Jimmy Wells plays his first match on Saturday morning in what should be a keenly contested O45s category which includes England player Tony Hetherington from Carlisle, fellow Scotland player Ronnie Carter from Lockerbie and Les Harkness who defeated Wells in the final of the Nunholm Club Championships.

The club’s Sue Strachan, who represented Scotland in the ladies O35s last season, will be hoping to do well on hot home courts.

Scotland’s top players Peter O’Hara and Simon Boughton are favourites to contest the O35 final. In the O40s, Craig Thomson from Aberdeen and Colin McMullan from Whitburn are touted for their title and at least 30 Scottish Masters internationalists will be on the courts at Nunholm this weekend.

Matches start on Saturday morning from 9:20 until around 6:30pm with semi-finals played on Sunday morning and the business end in the afternoon with the finals.

Entrance is free to all spectators to see some of Scotland’s top Masters’ squash players, some of the best squash seen locally and to support the home grown players.

The results and the subsequent rankings will help decide the Scottish team selections for the annual Home Internationals in May

The draw and details can be found here.

Squash: Masters event for Dumfries

14 11 2009

Over the weekend of Friday to Sunday, November 20 to 22, Nunholm Squash Club is hosting the inaugural South of Scotland Masters Open Squash Championships.

This is a Scottish Squash Masters circuit ranking tournament and provides age-group competitions from the O35s right up to the O75s for men and O35s and O-50s for ladies.

Participants in ranking tournaments gain points throughout the season which decide team selection for the Scottish teams participating in the Home Internationals held annually in May.

Tournament Director, Keith Gristwood, said: “This is a prestigious tournament to attract to Dumfries and we are proud to be hosts for the first time.

“We are expecting a large entry of 80-90 players, the majority of whom will be Scottish from as far away as Wick, Inverness and Aberdeen, but also from Cumbria and the Durham areas due to our club’s connections in these areas.”

He added: “We are extremely grateful to our numerous sponsors, particularly in the current economic climate, without whose financial assistance we would be hard pushed to put on such a tournament.

“Masters squash tournaments are very social events and many players are accompanied by their partners and some with their children so the town will benefit from an influx of 120+ people during the weekend seeking accommodation, food and drinks and entertainment.” Read the rest of this entry »

Also in line for a Cricket Scotland award is APD Dumfries’s wicketkeeper batsman Stuart Corbett-Byers. Squash: Court Renovations Update

3 11 2009

The latest stage of our squash court renovations programme was completed during the first week of October. The main focus of this stage was the repair and re-plastering of Court 1’s walls and the sanding-down of the floor. At some future date, the floor in Court 1 may need to be lifted, the bearers replaced and the floor re-laid.

On Courts 3 and 4, the front walls were sanded-down, repaired and re-painted while several loose floorboards (and springy areas) were also repaired and the court lines renewed. During the repair of the springy areas we were informed that the distance between the bearers on Courts 3 and 4 are significantly wider apart (700mm) than would be today’s norm (400mm) and as such in the future both these floors will likely require lifting, new bearers inserted and the floors re-laid to maintain the integrity of the playing surface.

We hope the recent repairs have met with your approval. If you discover any new loose boards please contact one of the committee members.

Thanks
The Squash Committee
