Tommy McBride saw Dumfries to a win at Weirs

APD Dumfries won their National league match on a wet Weir’s wicket by five wickets on Saturday and it was the next generation of players that won it for the Doonhamers.

Dumfries had several familiar faces missing due to holidays. Weirs looked at the conditions and the likely bowling and opted to bat. This proved an important decision with the ball skidding off a damp pitch.

The opening attack set the tone for the match by taking wickets. Geary bowled both openers and Rennie claimed the crucial wicket of South-African professional Ruan Nel and Weirs were 21 for 3. Read the rest of this entry »

JMS Nunholm hosts West Junior Championships

The cricket ground at Nunholm is hosting six games in the West Junior Championships this week and next week. The accompanying photograph shows the Dumfries and Galloway Under-15 side welcomed to the ground prior to their first game against Lanarkshire.

For the first time in their history Dumfries Cricket Club have a ground sponsor. As a result they have earned the addition of their name to the ground, hence JMS Nunholm. The Club Chairman, Rory Fergusson, said that “cricket is the business of JMS and it is thanks to their covers and sightscreens supplied to the club over several years that the ground can host these games and was also asked this year to host representative games for such as the Scotland Women and the East Academy”.

“Our relationship with JMS was further enhanced with their delivery of an excellent new 3-lane net facility last year and we are actively developing our long standing association to benefit the club and the cricket facilities in the region which they have helped to make some of the best in Scotland.”

The D&G U15s went on to register two wins over Lanarkshire and Clyde in their first two games at JMS Nunholm.

Nunholm Cambusdoon’ed

9 07 2008

The seconds were taken down (as Laura Robson would put it) in the last over against the seconds from Ayr, Cambusdoon, at home on Sunday. Nunholm totalled 199 for 8 largely thanks to a second century of the season to H Farries (100no) and a classy 42 from C Bellwood.  In reply Cambusdoon reached their target with 2 balls and 4 wickets to spare despite a sterling bowling performance from A Davidson who bowled 15 overs straight and took 4 wickets. The firsts game on Saturday at home against Prestwick was rained off.

The reason for a lot of games at the ground during these two weeks is because the D&G U15 and U13 junior teams each have five games to play in the West Championships. Nunholm is hosting 3 games each week.

Capital Crunch Game for APD Dumfries

24 06 2008

Last Saturday’s Guid Nychbur day match for APD Dumfries against Renfrew was not immune to the weather in the rest of Dumfries and was abandoned without a ball being bowled and with several paddling pools accumulating on the ground.

It was the same around Scotland and only one game in the SNCL Division 2 was completed. Unfortunately for Dumfries this resulted in a win for Stoneywood which meant them jumping to the top of the division.

The league is now at the stage of half the games having been played. On Saturday the top four sides play each other. Dumfries play RH Corstorphine in Edinburgh and Stoneywood play Dunfermline. Read the rest of this entry »
