International Caps for Nunholm Squash duo

2 05 2008

Two local players from the Nunholm Squash Club took part in the Masters Squash Home Internationals at the Welsh Institute of Sport last the weekend.

Sue Strachan was the Scotland number 3 and Scotland captain for the Women’s over-40 team and Jimmy Wells played number 2 for the Men’s over-45 team.

The first women’s match on the Friday was against Wales. Sandra Wilkes, a former club champion at Nunholm, lost 3-1 playing at number 5. Sue Strachan needed to win to keep the tie alive and managed to win her game 3-0 playing some her “best ever squash” on a hot court which suited her game. Unfortunately this wasn’t enough to prevent a 3-2 loss.

England’s women were the eventual champions and were too good for Scotland in the next game winning 5-0 with Sue’s opponent proving just too strong.

The final game against Ireland was a comfortable 4-1 win with Sue coming through a tough game to win 3-1 which placed Scotland third overall.

Meanwhile the Scotland men were playing on an adjacent court and started with a 3-2 win against Wales. Jimmy Wells playing at number 2 went down 3-1 after coming back to take the third set.

A strong England side won the Scotland England clash 4-1 with Jimmy one of their victims.

Scotland came back to finish runners-up to the Champion team England with a win against Ireland 3-2. Unfortunately the knee injury which has blighted his season prevented Jimmy from playing but he has the consolation that he has brought back yet another piece of silverware to Nunholm.

Sue reported back that “It was a successful weekend with some great squash and an honour to captain my team.”

Now the focus moves to the Masters Home Internationals in Dublin this weekend and Nunholm players Davy Rogan and Abbie Robertson who play for the Scotland men’s over-70 and over-65 sides.

Sue Strachan also “has a bit of work to do to ensure that I play my very best in the over-35’s team. It looks like it may be our strongest ever this year when we play host to the other 3 nations at the Edinburgh Sports club in 3 weeks time.”
