Cricket: Dumfries train-up for the summer

Dumfries Cricket Club resume their senior training sessions at Nunholm this weekend. The session for senior players, from all the club’s teams, runs from 11am to 1pm this Saturday morning, the 13th March, and on subsequent Saturdays.

The club’s first XI, APD Dumfries, play in the Scottish National League Division 2. The second XI, JMS Nunholm, play in Western Union Division 2 and the youthful Sunday XI, Site Electrical Dumfries, have been promoted to the Strathclyde Sunday League Division 2.

The club welcomes new players, senior or junior, for the summer whether for one of the two midweek evening teams, friendly matches, or league cricket on a Saturday or Sunday. They can drop in at a training session at Nunholm or contact Trefor Williams on 01387 256455. More information about the club is available at http://www.dumfriescricketclub.co.uk.

The new 1st XI captain for 2010, Stuart Corbett-Byers commented “APD Dumfries had one of their best ever seasons last year. We just fell short in the very last weekend of the season and missed out in the promotion play-off match for National Division 1.”

“This year we need to retain that standard and learn from the few lost matches and opportunities of last season.”

APD Dumfries’s first league match takes place on the 1st of May away at Ferguslie.

To herald the new season the club’s Annual Awards Dinner takes place next Friday, the 19th March at the Casa Mia restaurant and at the Nunholm clubhouse from 6:30pm.





Cricket: Senior Training at Nunholm

Senior cricket training at Nunholm (for all Dumfries CC teams) starts this Saturday, the 13th March , 11am-1pm.

Any new players, or current sports club members, interested in playing social midweek cricket, Saturday league cricket or Sunday friendlies are encouraged to come down to Nunholm and will be welcomed at the club.





Tennis: Title for Sophie

Sophie Robinson of Dumfries had a superb start to the 2010 tennis season when she lifted the Northumberland Open title in Newcastle last weekend.

Sophie had to come from a set down and 3-1 down in the second set to record a gritty three-set win in the final against a top ranked player.

The Gold Medal prize she won for the title is another addition to Sophie’s collection of titles won locally and afar and was in the U14 age category.

Coach Colin Dunbar said: “Sophie has the ability to be one of Scotland’s top players and has beaten most of the girls in those positions currently. Read the rest of this entry »





Hockey: Ten goal thriller

After some hard pre-work game preparation, Dumfries captain John McCoskry scraped together a team of eleven to travel to Ayr on Saturday.

Missing their top scorer for the season, Jimmy Clark – who is on 15 goals – the Dumfries captain was looking for some of the other players to get themselves on the scoresheet.

The journey to the game was eventful with snow, sleet, road closures and even a traffic accident to get the day started.

Ayr were currently in fourth place in the league and chasing a promotion spot in the table.

It was Ayr who pressed early and a couple of runs down the Dumfries right were dealt with well by Mike Redman and John McCoskry to keep the ball clear of the Dumfries area. Read the rest of this entry »

Cricket: U18s 2010 training underway

The build-up to the 2010 season is underway with training for the Dumfries CC Under 18’s taking place at Nunholm on Saturday mornings from 10:30 to 12. The sessions started on the 13th of February. Any new youth players interested in some cricket this season are welcome to turn up at the club on the Saturday morning.





Hockey: Dumfries men looking for new players

Dumfries mens hockey team are currently looking for new players.

Anyone interested in playing is invited to the club’s training sessions on Tuesday evenings from 6pm-8pm at the King George V Park, Glasgow Road Dumfries. Information can also be sought via e-mail from: hockey@ dumfriessportsclub.co.uk





Hockey: Victory for Dumfries hockey team

Dumfries went into Saturday’s game looking to continue their winning streak and make it three wins in the last three games.

It was always going to be a tough game after the sides finished level in a 10-goal thriller earlier in the season at Titwood, Glasgow.

New Year at the Dumfries Sports Club

The 2010 membership week at the Dumfries Sports Club at Nunholm starts this weekend. This provides the opportunity for existing members to renew their annual membership and provides a good opportunity for new members to join. Adults, juniors and family members are welcomed by the club.

The club offers tennis, squash, cricket and gym facilities and is the home for Dumfries Tennis Club, Dumfries Squash Club and Dumfries Cricket Club. The facilities are also used by Dumfries Running Club and Dumfries Hockey Club.

In preparation for the summer seasons junior sport is already well underway on Saturday mornings with 4 junior tennis coaching sessions for different age groups and cricket training sessions for the club’s 18’s. This year the club has also introduced squash coaching for those wanting to learn and improve their game which is proving to be popular.

The club’s squash competitions are nearing their final stages with the 3rd round of the Jim Thorburn handicap being completed this week with numbers having been whittled down from the original entry of 52. The finale to the season, the Club Finals night, takes place on Friday the 16th April and Nunholm is also the venue of the U-30 Dumfries and Galloway Closed Squash Tournament which takes place this weekend on Friday and Saturday.

Start of the Hundred Club

The club are starting a 100/200 Club from next month as as a fund-raising initiative.

It is open to members and non-members of the club. Profits go to club operation and maintenance.
