Squash: On the road again

30 10 2009

A contingent of squash players from Nunholm Squash Club headed to Glasgow last weekend for the second Scottish Squash Masters tournament of the season, the West Masters, and achieved somewhat mixed results.

This was not helped by the absence through injury of two of the club’s current Scottish Champions notably Jimmy Wells and Robin Ridley.

In the over 45s, the club had two participants in the top half of the draw, Les Harkness and Jim Scriven, along with an ex-Lockerbie player, Russell Hunter, now living in the north-east of England. Read the rest of this entry »

Squash: Junior club to build on its success

The popular Junior Squash and Racketball Club night has restarted at Nunholm Squash Club and takes place on Sunday nights between 7pm and 9pm.

The club has been lucky enough to have had a good crop of juniors coming through over the last few years with some being ranked at national level.

Nunholm has the current Dumfries and Galloway Schools Squash Champion Iain Anderson and the runner-up Douglas Brotherston leading the new crop of juniors.

There are also a number of younger players who now have a few seasons under their belt and they can only improve on their skills and technique as they are now physically stronger.

The junior club night is aimed at 12-18 year olds but organiser Raymond Currie said: “The club night is as much about our juniors using and enjoying the facilities the sports club has to offer.”

He added: “When they juniors are not on court they get to play free pool or watch Sky Sports TV and they will also get free refreshments.”

The club is fortunate again to have Jordan Currie, a qualified Scottish squash level one coach on hand again to help out at the club nights until the end of the year.

Jordan himself has come through the junior ranks at Nunholm and is keen to see more juniors try out squash and racketball.

The cost of the two-hour session is £2 but is free for the first night for any potential new member and rackets and eye protection is provided.

For further information contact Raymond Currie on 01387 257036 or 07515 994172.

Squash: Nunholm Masters on the road again

1 10 2009

A contingent of squash players from Nunholm Squash Club headed to Aberdeen last weekend for the first Scottish Squash tournament of the season, the Stonehaven Masters, and achieved mixed results.

In the over-70s, reigning Scottish champion Davy Rogan got off to a flying start winning both his round-robin matches in straight sets on the Saturday. He continued this form into the semi-final on Sunday morning. In the final he was up against an opponent 6 years his younger and narrowly lost each of the first two sets on the tie-break 10-9. This seemed to take the wind out of him and thus his younger opponent also took the third set to leave Davy runner-up. Read the rest of this entry »

Site passes 30,000 Hits

1 10 2009

The Dumfries Sports Club website passed a total of 30,000 hits in its 20 months online last Monday. That makes 10,000 in the last 4 months (it was 6 months for the previous ten thousand) and an average of over 80 a day. This September was the latest busiest month thanks to a late surge due to the running club asking for the half marathon results to be published on the site.

On average, over the past year, information for new members has been viewed two to three times a day and the most frequent search for a sport was for Dumfries and squash.

So continued contributions from the various sections are very welcome to help promote the club.
