19 year old Jordan Currie from Dumfries has recently qualified as a Scottish Squash UKCC Level 1 Coach. The 2nd year Edinburgh University P.E student who is a member of Nunholm Squash Club as well as of his University club is hoping to pass on the necessary guidance and skills to the juniors members who attend the popular Junior Clubnight which takes place on Sunday evenings from 7pm-9pm within Dumfries Sports Club. Squash: Close battle in league

In the John Henderson and Sons Squash League Division 1, Peter’s Fish and Chicken Bar played hosts to Finite Engineering at Nunholm.

It was yet another closely fought contest with Peter’s Fish and Chicken Bar having the edge and securing a hard fought 3-2 (14-7) victory.

At number one, Jim Wells and Garry McKean entertained the balcony with some long and excellent rallies, Jim took the first two games, but Garry was hot on his heels and clinched the third, Wellsy then regained control and cruised home 9-3 in the fourth to win 3-1. Read the rest of this entry »





Hockey: League leaders visit

Dumfries hockey club closed 2009 with what would be their toughest game of the season, a home game to league leaders Strathclyde University.

Having not played for two weeks due to frozen pitches, the Dumfries players were clearly struggling to find any rhythm.

The Strathclyde players showed their class as they stroked the ball around the field with relative ease as the Dumfries team struggled to get possession of the ball. Read the rest of this entry »

The Dumfries and Galloway Closed Tournament was once again held at Dumfries Sports Club.

Attracting more than 40 entries from around the region, the competition was sponsored by Botex Forestry Cranes, Dalbeattie.

Play started on Monday night without the big two of Jim Wells – illness and Les Harkness – injury.

This really opened up the draw and made for some great matches and brought some new faces into the frame.

Squash: Iain ready to move up

Teenager Iain Anderson – a member of Nunholm Squash Club – recently took part in a Junior Squash Graded tournament at Edinburgh Sports Club.

The 16-year-old, who won his divisional group in his previous tournament at Bridge of Allan, continued to show good form and again won his division quite comfortably.

This should now see Iain move up the rankings and to a higher divisional grouping where he faces much tougher matches.

The national open junior squash competitions will continue in the New Year with the first in Perth in January, but to the present and Iain will defend the Dumfries and Galloway Secondary Schools title which is again being held at Lockerbie Sports Club.

It take place on Monday, December 8 at 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start.

The competition is still open for entries and anyone interested can contact Harry Earl, secretary at Lockerbie on 01461 204686 or 07808 417062 and with Raymond Currie, junior convenor at Nunholm on 01387 257036 to enter.

New seating arrangements

There is a new look in the Sports Club’s suite with the addition of a set of chairs which have been generously donated to the club by Dumfries and Galloway College.

Following their move to the Crichton, the college left much of its equipment which it considered as surplus to requirements. And rather than throwing the equipment away, the college decided to donate it locally.

So thanks to the committee the Sports Club has benefitted as well as a number of other community groups, schools and clubs.





Hockey Club back white ribbon campaign

The Dumfries Hockey Club are backing an international campaign to end violence against women.

The Dumfries Sports Club Annual General Meeting takes place in the club lounge on Wednesday the 17th December at 7:30pm.

Any nominations, in writing, duly proposed and seconded should be addressed to the Club Secretary.

Any matters for discussion, in writing, and addressed to the Secretary should be submitted by Monday the 1st December.

Boxing Day Quiz and Squash Handicap

hollyCome and join us on Boxing Day 12:00 till 7pm.

We will have a Handicap Squash Competition just to blow off a few of the Christmas Day cobwebs starting at 12.

The famous Boxing Day Quiz starts at 14:00 with fabulous prizes. Soup and crusty bread will be there to feed those minds numbed by too much turkey.

All sports club members invited. Bring your friends! There is a list up at the club to get an idea of numbers.

It’s back! The first Poker Night of the winter is announced.

7pm Nunholm, Friday 12th December.

Your host, in charge once more, is Davie ‘Vegas’ Davidson. Contact him to be sure of a seat at the tables or just try turning up on the night. £10 entry and £5 buy in. This Las Vegas Night is organised by the cricket section but all sports club members are most definitely welcome.





10,000 Hits

Is this site used much? The new Dumfries Sports Club website has been online for some nine months so far and has just recorded the 10,000th hit on the site.

That is, on average, about 35 hits a day with the busiest day attracting nearly 130 page impressions and the number of visits each month have increased over time. For the stattos amongst you some more detail is provided below. However with these numbers hopefully the site is proving its worth in attracting interest and members to the club and increasing involvement within the existing club members.
