In the Scotland Squad

Tommy McBride takes charge v Stoneywood

Congratulations to the Cricket Section’s Thomas McBride who has been picked for the Scotland U17 Squad and has been called up for the winter training sessions in preparation for the 2009 season. This means he joins Chris Bellwood who is in the Scotland Under 19 squad.

The 1st XI players are under the watchful eye of recent Scotland captain Craig Wright who is charged with overseeing the development of the young players in Scotland’s National squads.

In the season just gone the Scotland Under 17s played in the ECB (English and Wales Cricket Board) U17 Championships for the first time and narrowly missed out on promotion. So those that get into the side will be playing against U17 opposition from the English county scene next season.

Tommy was introduced to the sport by the local council’s cricket taster sessions which take place each year and is a product of the local club’s regular Monday night junior coaching sessions. This is a deserved reward for plenty of hard work and plenty of talent.

1 11 2008

What exactly are those strange rackets being used on the squash courts? You can find more out about racketball, including how to play it, here
http://www.englandsquash.com/racketball/

And as for Racketball Versus Racquetball?

Two nations separated by a common language often trips off the tongue of media commentators when discussing the relationship between Britain and the United States. And you could be forgiven for thinking that is solely what separates racketball from its cousin across the Atlantic (racquetball).

However while the basic design of the squash court is shared by the two codes there are indeed differences that mark them out as separate sporting disciplines. …”

Progress continues for mens hockey team

24 10 2008

Dumfries travelled to play Uddingston full of confidence after a good victory the previous week. A strong squad of 12 were hoping to continue to their climb up the table. A new warm-up routine also saw the team ready to play from the start, which was something, which had been identified as a problem in previous weeks.

The team lined up in their favoured 3-4-3 formation and after a few minutes of pressure from Uddingston, Dumfries got a foothold in the game and started to work the ball well around the pitch. Read the rest of this entry »

An Ill Wind

21 10 2008

On Sunday afternoon a very large branch from one of the trees on the far side of the road north of the ground sheared off and landed on the cricket nets. It also landed on the electrical lines running alongside the road.

The damage to the recently built cricket nets is significant, as can be seen from the photographs. The tree landed on the end section nearest to the clubhouse and fractured and bent the supporting poles. Each of the three lanes has been damaged and that damage runs down the length of the nets with the structure bent and poles knocked out of place or their base in the concrete twisted.

The nets were only completed in the middle of last year thanks to grant support from Awards For All and the local council and were a significant project for the cricket section. It remains to be seen what steps will be needed to restore them to full operation.

Davy Douglas of Backswing views the new court 2 advertising

The newly refurbished Blue court 2 at Dumfries Sports Club now has a new tin sponsor. Backswing, the main agent for Karakal Rackets and Equipment for Dumfries and Galloway and operated by Davy Douglas, are now the principal advertisers on Court 2.

Davy, who is a long-standing member of the club and was heavily involved on the Nunholm Squash Club committee for many years as secretary, was delighted with the new court tin.

He said: “The continuing improvements of the courts are a credit to the hard work of the present squash club committee. The squash playing members of the club have given Backswing tremendous support over the years. So in return it is nice to be able to give something back to the club with sponsorship of the new Court 2 tin.” Read the rest of this entry »
