Hockey: Dumfries Ladies 1sts go down two nil at Jordanhill

7 09 2010

With only ten players travelling and tropical weather conditions Dumfries were faced with a challenging opening match against a young Hillhead team.

Good linking play from midfield and attack led to some early opportunities that threatened the Hillhead keeper and gave Dumfries a strong start. For first twenty minutes they continued to test the defence and Topping won an early corner for the side, which was unlucky to not produce a goal.

Hillhead then applied pressure for the remainder of the half and used their extra player well to expose the gap in midfield and over load the defence. However, keeper McNay and her defensive line held out and cleared several penalty corners. Half time eventually arrived with a sigh of relief! Read the rest of this entry »

Hockey: Dumfries Ladies 2nds hit Eight

7 09 2010

Dumfries were a little rusty to start with and although camped out in the visitors half were unable to convert any of the chances they had in the first 15 minutes.

However when Janet Stainsby scored the first goal it gave a little bit of confidence and soon some great team play was to be seen. This had the opposite effect on the visiting side who just could not contend with the skilful passing of the Dumfries side. By half time it was 4-0 and by full time a fabulous 8-0 win for the home team. Read the rest of this entry »

Hockey: Captain’s report for 2009/10

28 05 2010

With the loss of eight players, including top goal scorer and player of the season, this was always going to be a hard season, writes John McCoskry, Dumfries Men’s Hockey club captain 09/10.

This was evident in our opening four games where we were over five players short and subsequently lost 19 goals with only two in response – one of our worst ever starts to the season.

Things started to look up after the fifth game, it was at home to Kelburne and our first with a full squad. We romped home with a convincing 5 – 0 win. This we followed up with a 2-1 home win to Ayr. Read the rest of this entry »

Hockey: Dumfries win over Giffnock

26 03 2010

Dumfries men were keen to get their good form going again after some late call-off’s saw them concede their game last week to Helensburgh and subsequently take a 5-0 loss.

However they were not to let that get to them as no defeats in the last five games had seen Dumfries climb the league table three places into sixth.

Dumfries started the game brightly and it was clear to see that the new training schedule was paying dividends as they knocked the ball confidently round the pitch. Read the rest of this entry »

Hockey: Ten goal thriller

5 03 2010

After some hard pre-work game preparation, Dumfries captain John McCoskry scraped together a team of eleven to travel to Ayr on Saturday.

Missing their top scorer for the season, Jimmy Clark – who is on 15 goals – the Dumfries captain was looking for some of the other players to get themselves on the scoresheet.

The journey to the game was eventful with snow, sleet, road closures and even a traffic accident to get the day started.

Ayr were currently in fourth place in the league and chasing a promotion spot in the table.

It was Ayr who pressed early and a couple of runs down the Dumfries right were dealt with well by Mike Redman and John McCoskry to keep the ball clear of the Dumfries area. Read the rest of this entry »

Hockey: Busy weekend for Dumfries Ladies 2nd XI

11 12 2009

This was a busy weekend for the Dumfries Second XI with two away games to Glasgow.

The first of the two games was against Glasgow Uni thirds. This was the first game that Dumfries seconds had played in the past few weeks and they struggled to get a team to travel for this game.

Initially, Dumfries found it difficult to settle. The Dumfries defence worked hard and did really well to keep the Glasgow side from scoring early in the game. Twenty minutes into the game the home team scored the opening goal. This goal gave them confidence and they soon pressurised the Dumfries defence gaining several penalty corners, one of which they managed to sneak another goal past Susan Low (GK). Dumfries did not give up and were rewarded with their efforts when striker Gladys McClymont opened the goal sheet for Dumfries. Read the rest of this entry »

Hockey: Fine win for depleted side

4 12 2009

Dumfries travelled to Giffnock with a depleted squad of only nine players. This was a crucial game as both teams were fighting for points to pull away from the bottom two places.

In the early part of the game Dumfries remarkably found themselves having equal possession with their opponents. The opening goal came midway through the first half when a Rennie shot was saved by the keeper but the cat-like reactions of Clark saw him first to react and he slammed the ball through the keeper’s legs.
