Hockey: Player shortage hits Dumfries

Dumfries Hockey Club’s men’s team welcomed newly promoted side Monklands to the King George V Park last Saturday for their first fixture of the new season.

Unfortunately holiday and work commitments, compounded by recent departures to university, resulted in the Dumfries side initially fielding ten players and this reduced to nine for the second half due to work commitments but at least the sun was shining.

Monklands took advantage of their numerical advantage and quickly took the game to Dumfries, pressing the home side into a defensive mode. Read the rest of this entry »





Hockey: New season training starts 11th Aug

Hockey training for the new season resumes on Tuesday 11th of August from 6-8pm at King George V.

League matches are played on Saturdays. We welcome new players of all ages and abilities to come and join us at any of our training sessions.

This season it is the NEW Dumfries Hockey Club since the Ladies and Mens clubs have just merged. For more details about the hockey club see here.





Hockey: New Dumfries Hockey Club

The Dumfries Ladies and Mens Hockey Clubs have merged to become the new Dumfries Hockey Club.

2009 Leavers gameIn the 2009/10 season coming up the club has 3 teams all playing in the South West district.

The ladies 1st XI play in Division 1 whilst the ladies 2nd XI play in Division 3.

The mens team play in Division 2.

Hockey: Dumfries ladies win league

Dumfries Ladies 1st XI hockey team have been crowned champions of the Scottish West District Division 2 league.

They finished in style with a champagne toast after their last match. The team came out top against 10 other teams from Greenock to Uddingston, winning 13 out of their 17 matches for the 2008-2009 season. The team will move up to Division 1 in September.

The ladies 2nd XI team endured a competitive season in Division 3, facing both strong and experienced teams, with many younger players showing real promise for the future.

They won four out of their 16 matches, with Angela Beattie, team captain, being awarded the Division 3 player of season. The team will start the 2009-2010 season in Division 4.

The men’s team had their most successful season for many years and finished in third place in Division 2, narrowly missing out on promotion. The men finished with eleven victories, one draw and seven defeats, scoring 56 goals and conceding 38. Read the rest of this entry »





Hockey: Three wins for Dumfries

Dumfries went into Saturday’s game against Hillhead filled with confidence after getting back to winning ways last week, in a tough fought game away to Ayr.

A solid squad of 13 players were hopeful of getting a good result and continue their progress in the league.

Hockey: League leaders visit

Dumfries hockey club closed 2009 with what would be their toughest game of the season, a home game to league leaders Strathclyde University.

Having not played for two weeks due to frozen pitches, the Dumfries players were clearly struggling to find any rhythm.

The Strathclyde players showed their class as they stroked the ball around the field with relative ease as the Dumfries team struggled to get possession of the ball. Read the rest of this entry »

The Dumfries Hockey Club are backing an international campaign to end violence against women.

Dumfries make it five from five against Hillhead

A high-flying Dumfries team travelled to Glasgow full of confidence after four wins in a row and clean sheets in their last two.

But players knew the game would not be a stroll in the park as Hillhead were on the same points in the league.

Dumfries hit Ayr for six

After a three-week break, Dumfries were looking to continue the form that had seen them win their last two matches in the league and climb the table into fifth place.

It would be a tough test for the Dumfries side against an Ayr team that had not lost a game for one-and-a-half years and was currently sitting in third place in the table.

Progress continues for mens hockey team

Dumfries travelled to play Uddingston full of confidence after a good victory the previous week. A strong squad of 12 were hoping to continue to their climb up the table. A new warm-up routine also saw the team ready to play from the start, which was something, which had been identified as a problem in previous weeks.

The team lined up in their favoured 3-4-3 formation and after a few minutes of pressure from Uddingston, Dumfries got a foothold in the game and started to work the ball well around the pitch. Read the rest of this entry »





First points secured for Dumfries in season opening match

Dumfries mens hockey team welcomed GHK to the King George V Park on Saturday hoping to secure their first league points of the new season.

However, after a disappointing first half display saw the home side 2 – 0 down, a win seemed very unlikely but this was to be the proverbial game of two halves.

Losing centre forward Clark to a yellow card offence somehow triggered a quite astonishing turnaround of fortunes. Despite the temporary suspension, Campbell reduced the deficit following the penalty corner secured at the time of Clark’s dismissal. Read the rest of this entry »
