Dumfries’s Tom McBride has been rewarded for being the top home grown run scorer in National League Division 2, by being picked for the Western Warriors versus the East last Sunday in the Scottish Regional Series.

He was also named named as twelfth man for the three day match between Scotland Lions, the Scotland 2nd XI, and Durham County 2nd XI at Morpeth which commenced on Monday.

After a win against Leicestershire and a draw against Warwickshire the Scots are seeking to maintain an undefeated record at this level.

Dumfries Juniors v Ferguslie

Dumfries Juniors

The fixtures at Nunholm finished on Sunday with a junior match against Ferguslie U13s. The last home game of the season was played in sunny conditions and a fast outfield.

Ferguslie proved more effective with the bat but the Dumfries batsmen resisted in a time match to hold onto a draw for a good day of junior cricket which was spiced by a post match barbeque to round off the Nunholm season.

This weekend the Dumfries Kwik cricket team travel to Perth for the National Clubs Kwik Cricket Festival and Dumfries play a friendly at Gatehouse in the last match of the season.

Cricket: Youth wins end of season encounter for Dumfries

8 09 2010

On the last home Saturday of the season Site Electrical Dumfries beat Windyedge, the visitors from Glasgow Accies, by 34 runs in a friendly match thoroughly enjoyed by both sides to round off the senior season at Nunholm.

However it was youth to the fore as the younger members of the side were set the task of winning the game. The Dumfries side were put in and eleven year old Chris McBride and Adam Elliott opened the innings.

With Elliott hitting the loose deliveries for four and McBride looking entirely comfortable the pair passed a fifty opening partnership and had reached 68 when Elliott was unlucky to be bowled for forty, in just under fifty balls, by a distinctly high full toss.

Todd Rafferty partnered McBride in a forty run partnership before falling to a close run out decision for an assured fifteen with the side just past a hundred. Read the rest of this entry »

Hockey: Dumfries Ladies 1sts go down two nil at Jordanhill

7 09 2010

With only ten players travelling and tropical weather conditions Dumfries were faced with a challenging opening match against a young Hillhead team.

Good linking play from midfield and attack led to some early opportunities that threatened the Hillhead keeper and gave Dumfries a strong start. For first twenty minutes they continued to test the defence and Topping won an early corner for the side, which was unlucky to not produce a goal.

Hillhead then applied pressure for the remainder of the half and used their extra player well to expose the gap in midfield and over load the defence. However, keeper McNay and her defensive line held out and cleared several penalty corners. Half time eventually arrived with a sigh of relief! Read the rest of this entry »

Hockey: Dumfries Ladies 2nds hit Eight

7 09 2010

Dumfries were a little rusty to start with and although camped out in the visitors half were unable to convert any of the chances they had in the first 15 minutes.

However when Janet Stainsby scored the first goal it gave a little bit of confidence and soon some great team play was to be seen. This had the opposite effect on the visiting side who just could not contend with the skilful passing of the Dumfries side. By half time it was 4-0 and by full time a fabulous 8-0 win for the home team. Read the rest of this entry »

Cricket: Dawson ton caps Dumfries winning season

1 09 2010

Drew Dawson celebrates his century against SMRH

A century at Nunholm by Drew Dawson capped the APD Dumfries league season by ensuring a final match win and their fifteenth win of the season. Already declared champions of National League Division 2, a possible anti-climax to the season was avoided when the side posted a first innings total of 253 for 4. In reply SMRH were all out for 168 with wickets shared amongst the Dumfries bowlers.

Immediately after that 85 run win the league trophy was presented by Cricket Scotland to Captain Stuart Corbett-Byers which in turn was followed by the rest of the team wasting yet more champagne, or a cheaper Spanish equivalent, over the captain in celebrating a winning climax to the season.

Dumfries opted to bat first at home and with a new opening partnership of Tom McBride and Drew Dawson. The opening bowlers Coyle and C Bissett tested the batsmen on a wicket which offering some movement and the opening was steady rather than spectacular and after ten overs the Nunholm side had reached 26.

The House DJ

More attention grabbing at the time was the musical accompaniment for the occasional boundary. In the spirit of celebrating the last day of a successful season a musical fanfare from the house DJ greeted boundaries and wickets during the match and caused a few to metaphorically fall off their chairs. SMRH took the music in good spirits but must have been intrigued when “Bad Boys” heralded the arrival of the openers.

Meanwhile back at the cricket the openers were intent in providing the solid platform with the fifty coming up in the 17th over and the hundred in the 31st. It was at that point that McBride, looking to boost the scoring rate, came down the wicket and was comprehensively bowled by the other Bissett (G) for 43. Read the rest of this entry »
